You Shouldn’t Hang Your Used Mask on Your Rearview Mirror

Mask and face coverings are required in most public areas now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s nothing more annoying than reaching your destination without a mask and needing to find another. This has created a new trend of people hanging their masks on their rearview mirror like a graduation tassel. Research shows that leaving a used mask on your rearview mirror is not the best idea.

According to the CDC, a disposable mask should only be worn once and disposed of. A cloth mask should be washed after each use. You shouldn’t wear the same cloth mask repeatedly without washing it. What about leaving a clean mask hanging in the rearview mirror? It still may not be a good idea to hang them from your rearview mirror because it can be an obstruction of view. Kerry Breen with Today suggests leaving the mask in a clean, convenient area. Breen reports that some people have opted to use “clean receptacles with good ventilation” that allow the mask to “air out.” Some users reported using brown paper bags.

Although it may feel convenient to toss your mask along the rearview mirror, it’s best to clean it after each use and safely store it. Make sure to stay up to date with the most recent news to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Make sure also to schedule time to clean and sanitize the inside of your vehicle.
